A couple of weeks ago, I started to notice that I was very tired, feeling mentally and physically depleted.  My body hurt!  My shoulders were the tightest I had every experienced and my hip flexors ached (so friggin weird)!  And I felt a bit depressed, a bit overwhelmed and pretty damned cranky.

Then I started to notice that all I wanted was chocolate.  Not sweet, syrupy Cadbury’s, but hard core dark chocolate.  I’d get home at the end of the day and think, “what should I have for dinner?” and all I wanted my this yummy chocolate pudding that I adapted from Sarah Wilson’s I Quit Sugar program.

So I Googled “chocolate cravings” and it said that I might be magnesium deficient.   Aaaaaah that all made sense.  Magnesium deficiency results in muscle soreness, tightness and weakness.  It can lead to apathy, insomnia, tiredness and irritability.  It is caused by chronic stress and a sub-optimal diet as well as some other things.  And as much as I love my business and this life I have chosen, sometimes the stress is overwhelming.  I’m trying to teach myself to switch off more because I often find myself thinking about work every single waking moment!  And just like everyone else, when I feel a stressed I reach for the junk food (in my case cheese & onion chips).

Back to why I was craving chocolate pudding… raw cacao is the highest source of magnesium in food.  And this pudding has cacao in it.  It also has almond meal which is another natural source of magnesium.

So, this is how I’ve dealt with my magnesium deficiency…  I have one of these puddings almost every day, I spray myself with Magnesium Spray every morning, I am taking some more quiet time that has nothing to do with my work, and I’m trying to remember to be gentle on my body and my mind to help reduce the stress that may have helped cause the deficiency in the first place.

One of the additions I made to the original recipe was to add a drop of doTERRA Wild Orange essential oil.  Not only does it make the pudding taste like jaffas, it helps me emotionally with the stress I feel about my business.  Wild Orange is the oil of abundance and it allows us to let go of things like fear, workaholic tendencies, low energy and feeling discouraged and encourages feelings of playfulness, generosity and enjoyment of life.

Here is my magic pudding recipe:

  • 1/4 cup almond meal
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk (or any milk)
  • 1 tablespoon of raw cacao
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut
  • 1/4 teaspoon rice malt syrup, honey or maple syrup (to taste)
  • 1 square 90% dark chocolate
  • 1 drop doTERRA Wild Orange essential oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a mug and microwave for 1.5 minutes.  I serve mine with some coconut yogurt.  Enjoy!
