I promise, the title of this post is not an exaggeration! Most people’s breakfasts set them up for failure. If you have ever experienced a mid-morning slump then I am talking to you! In my old life I used to be “starving” by 10.30am and ready for a nana nap shortly afterwards. I was fuelling myself with Carbs and sugar and coffee. And I rarely had any protein in the morning. Perhaps on the weekend when I went out for breakfast.
The thing is, supermarket cereal is generally no more than a bowl of sugar disguised by crunchy bits. And for many of us, the gluten found in wheat based cereals and breads cause bloating and other stomach problems. Coffee just stimulates the adrenal glands which in turn produce more stress hormone (cortisol) which puts weigh on our bellies.
So, how can breakfast change your life? If you fuel yourself first thing in the morning with healthy nourishing foods you will not get the mid morning crash and you will slim down. Fresh whole foods are the best choice and you always want to eat protein rich foods to keep you fuller longer. A green smoothie full of fibre with added seeds like chia for protein will keep you energised all morning. But I do realise green smoothies aren’t for everyone.
Can I tempt you with some homemade granola?? I wish again that the internet had smell-o-vision because this stuff smells amazing! And it is soooooo healthy. It’s full of nuts and seeds which are packed with protein and it contains only one tablespoon of coconut sugar for about 5 servings. It tastes like caramel and is packed full of lots of minerals so it is much nicer than refined white sugar. Make a batch or two for the week and serve with Greek yoghurt and berries. SOOOOOO much better than store bought cereal. I promise!
1 to 2 cups shredded coconut
1 tablespoon of coconut sugar
4 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
A handful each of your favourite nuts and seeds like hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, chia seeds, pepitas, sunflower seeds etc.
A good sprinkle of vanilla powder and cinnamon
Method: Roughly chop the nuts you have chosen. Mix all the ingredients together. Spread onto a baking tray lined with baking paper. Spread your granola mixture evenly onto the tray. Bake at 180 degrees for 20 minutes turning once. Don’t make any plans for the rest of the day so you can breathe in the beautiful aromas for as long as possible!
